RICHARD HAWKINS in conversation with The Brooklyn Rail

Monday, April 18, 2022
1:00PM EST via Zoom

On the occasion of his exhibition The Forrest Bess Variations, artist Richard Hawkins joins artist, curator, and critic Andrew Woolbright for a conversation. The event concludes with a poetry reading.

Hawkins's current solo show, his seventh at Greene Naftali, features a series of paintings that pay tribute to the self-taught American painter Forrest Bess (1911-77). A long-time admirer of Bess's visionary practice, Hawkins (who also hails from rural Texas) has repeatedly examined Bess's oeuvre through his own lens. This latest group of paintings and works on paper adapts symbols lifted from Bess's personal cosmology into something wholly new.
