Walk Through British Art: 60 Years

Celebrate the work of British women artists from 1960s to the present day

This room focuses on the work of British women artists. It includes work from several generations who have explored similar themes. Spaces and structures, the idea of home, and fictional identities feature throughout the works.

Hilary Lloyd's One Minute of Water helps us focus on the act of looking. Lloyd has looped footage of rippling water into a mesmerising film that appears to be ever-changing. Its framing removes any clues to the wider setting and gives it a sense of infinity. The effect of dappled sunlight on the water’s surface transforms the footage into an abstract and painterly scene. Lloyd carefully chose the equipment, which she considers part of the work, in order to emphasise our physical relationship with what we see.

This display highlights how women artists have been under-represented by galleries. It is part of Tate’s ongoing commitment to increasing representation of women artists across its galleries.
