Couch Potato with Dan

Front Gallery, 8th Fl

June 30 – August 5, 2016

Greene Naftali is pleased to announce Couch Potato with Dan, a special presentation by New York–based artist Mieko Meguro. For this occasion, Meguro has converted Greene Naftali’s front gallery into a simulated living room, equipping the space with a television playing a selection of Dan Graham’s favorite movies and pillows embroidered with his image. Installed on the walls are graphite line drawings of Graham, captioned to indicate his various locales and activities— “Dan locks …” “Dan thinks …” “Dan on the phone …”

Couch Potato with Dan is a continuation of a series also realized in the form of paintings, zines, and T-shirts. With a precise and sensitive hand, Meguro captures Graham in a variety of intimate and intermissive moments. Remarking on the series in 2013, Meguro likened the range of expressions she observed in Graham to the Japanese Kabuki tradition of mie – a pose struck and sustained by a Kabuki actor to signal a narrative arc. Moreover, she has discussed her process as one of capturing a subject with which she has a genuine engagement, recalling an art school teacher who told her she must love what she draws.

Recent solo presentations by Meguro include Asia House, London, and Galleria Massimo Minini, Project Room, Brescia, Italy. Previous group exhibitions include “Looking Back/The 10th White Columns Annual,” White Columns, New York; “Living Rooms,” OLD ROOM, New York; “Another Cats Show,” Ooga Booga, Los Angeles; and “A Drawing Show; Curated by Dan Graham,” Galerie Micheline Szwajcer, Antwerpen.
