The Greene Naftali Gallery is pleased to present the first New York solo show of Fatimah Tuggar opening on November 29th and continuing through January 6th. Born in Nigeria, Tuggar received her master’s degree in fine art at Yale University and attended both the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. She recently inaugurated The Kitchen’s new visual gallery with a video installation entitled Fusion Cuisine, 2000 which traveled to Le Musee Chateau in France. Her work has been included in the following international Bienale exhibitions; the Kwangju Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial and the 2nd Johannesburg Biennale. Her work has also been shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and P.S.1 Center for Contemporary Art. She lives and works in New York.

Fatimah Tuggar has constructed a world of images and sculptural objects which investigate the way in which cultures meet, collide and hybridize. Drawing upon her personal history growing up in Northern Nigeria, Tuggar examines the role of women and the influence of technology in a world driven by development. The computer manipulated images collage photographs from rural Africa with modern advertisements and high-tech artifacts which create images where things seem surreally out-of-place or displaced. The images are digitally made and reveal their constructed nature to question our commercial systems of representation and how cultural image is formed.

The sculptures pull Fatimah’s vocabulary of images into three dimensional by using real objects, primarily domestic, including a Calabash bowl, a leather cushion seating arrangement, a makeup holder, a ceiling fan, writing tablets, dowery plates and an old fashioned radio. Tuggar manipulates these objects so they continue to function but reinforms them with social content and personal history.
